Your Laser Eye Correction Choices

Did you know that LASIK is not the only form of laser eye correction? Actually, there are many other techniques used besides LASIK. Plus, new techniques are being developed constantly, making laser vision surgery even more accurate every year. Choose a corrective laser eye surgery technique based on your specific eye condition and personal preference. Be sure you have all of the information before making your decision; meet with your doctor for a consultation. They should be able to help you choose a method based on your specific eye correction prescription, as the different methods are suitable for different kinds of vision issues. These are a few of the most common laser eye correction methods:

1. LASIK is the most commonly used procedure today. It can help correct the vision of people who are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism, as well as several other eye conditions. To begin, the surgeon makes a small incision in the eyeball, creating a flap. Then, a computer-guided laser beam carefully reshapes the cornea under the flap. This precise reshaping of the cornea is what makes laser eye surgery so remarkable. Because the cornea bends the light entering the eye, any reshaping of the cornea changes what the patient sees. After the cornea has been reshaped, the flap is repositioned over the eye, where it will stay without any stitches. In just a few days, it will have healed.
2. LASEK - Unlike LASIK, the surgeon gains access to the cornea by lifting the outer layer of your eyeball with a tiny blade. Then, the tissue is loosened with alcohol so that the laser beam can be used underneath it. Just like with LASIK, a laser beam is used to reshape the cornea, and the eye will have recovered in a day or two.
3. Zyoptix- One of the very newest laser vision correction procedures, it can be used for a wide variety of eye conditions. The laser used for Zyoptix works much more quickly, so the surgeon can be more accurate in reshaping your cornea. Slight changes in the shape of your cornea can affect your vision, so the more advanced laser can produce better vision results.
4. PRK- The oldest method of laser vision correction, Photorefractive keratectomy is not commonly used anymore. During PRK, the surgeon uses a laser to “vaporize” the outer surface of the eye. It works best on people with mild or moderate eye conditions, and more advanced methods have replaced PRK in most cases. Because of the method of removal of the outer surface of your eye, the recovery time is longer than with newer procedures, and your eye can take several months to fully heal.

These are just a few of the laser eye surgery options available. Laser eye correction methods all involve the reshaping of the cornea in order to change your vision. They differ in how the surgeon accesses your cornea, as well as how the cornea is reshaped. Before choosing a method, discuss the possible options with your laser surgeon. Your surgeon will be able to help you choose the right method for your situation.
