What Does Laser Eye Surgery Involve?

Laser eye correction can be a scary thought because of the laser beams directed at your eyes. As children, we’re all taught to keep things out of our eyes, right? However, laser eye correction is painless, and can improve your vision in impressive ways. It takes just a few minutes, and your eyes will be completely healed in just a few days. If your eye doctor has recommended corrective laser eye surgery, you should seriously consider it. Although it’s not right for all situations, people who have had the procedure have experienced amazing results. Here’s how the surgery works:
After you arrive for the surgery, you’ll be given a special anesthetic in the form of eye drops. You will be awake for the entire procedure, which may be a little uncomfortable, but it will be painless.
Once your eyes are numb, the surgeon will gain access to the cornea. Depending on the specific procedure you’ve selected, this method will differ, and new methods are constantly being developed. The advancing technology of corrective laser eye surgery makes the procedure more and more accurate each year. One of the latest developments in laser eye surgery is the LASIK method, where a flap is created in the corner of the eye. After the surgery, this flap is simply repositioned over the eye. Another method is PRK. The surgeon does not physically cut into the eye, instead using a laser to “vaporize” the outer surface. This procedure can result in a bit more discomfort during the healing process, but you won’t have to worry about the flap healing properly.
Once the surgeon has revealed the cornea, a computer-directed laser beam will carefully reshape the cornea. This will affect exactly how light entering your eye is perceived, because the cornea is the part of the eye that produces vision.
After the cornea has been reshaped, the surgeon will finish the procedure by repositioning the flap over the cornea, if you’re using the LASIK method. After a few days, your eyes will have healed completely; it will take a little longer for the surface of your eye to recover with the PRK method.
At the end of your visit, a nurse will explain the recovery process. Be sure to set aside a few days for recovery, so that you can rest your eyes and allow them to heal. After this short recovery time, you’ll be able to judge the results of the procedure. Return to your eye doctor for a checkup to evaluate your new eyesight. Laser eye correction is a very fast procedure, and the results will amaze you.
